Sam Roberts - "Them Kids"
I love catchy songs where the main character is a crotchety old man yelling at the kids on his lawn for not dancing. Especially if it sounds like The Kinks.
And has a cool video.

Song of the Week 2/13/09
The Lonely Island (featuring T. Pain) - "I'm on a Boat"
I must admit that the videos this SNL trio cooks up run hot ("Dick in a Box," "Jizz in My Pants") and cold ("The Space Olympics," "Ras Trent") for me. But this song and its clip are a shining reason why I DVR every new SNL episode.
This track works on two levels:
1) It's fucking funny. I can't stop laughing when T. Pain sings "motherfucker" and "I fucked a mermaid" or when Andy Samberg raps "I got a nautical themed pashmina afghan."
2) It's damn catchy. I've been humming it almost ever day since it debuted on SNL February 7th.
Seriously, I think this is the best thing on SNL this season.
Okay, maybe second best.

Song of the Week 2/6/09
Robyn Hitchock & The Venus 3 - "Up to Our Nex"
I haven't been able to spend much time with Goodnight Oslo, Hitchcock and the Venus 3's follow-up to Olé! Tarantula (I only got the album Friday). But "Up to Our Nex" was available as a free preview download if you preordered the album before its February 17th release. And I definitely played that MP3 a few times awaiting my package from YepRoc.
I said it in 2006 and I'll say it again--the Venus 3 are Hitchcock's best band since The Soft Boys. I expect Goodnight Oslo to have a lock on my Top 10 for this year.

Song of the Week 1/30/09
Dire Straits - "Down to the Waterline"
At my office we've instituted a new program where someone gets to pick a different radio station every morning and that's what we listen to all day. Friday my pick was The Sound out of L.A., where one of my former L.A. co-workers Larry Morgan is the morning drive air talent. The station plays a decent mix of music--and they really impressed me by playing "Down to the Waterline" from Dire Straits self-titled 1978 debut. Any station that plans a deep cut like this one in morning drive is always going to impress me. I was so impressed that I ended up listening to the first three Dire Straits albums while traveling around Brooklyn this weekend. That made the two days bearable.
